Broken Cookies … the bright side

Gem Cookies

In light of the world’s wavering balance between peace and war, my thoughts have focused again and again on this land so richly blessed with freedom. During the past three weeks I have reflected on my life and the people I cherish. What would I do if it were one of my family members that perished from the terrorists vile actions. 6,000 families suffered a loss, the numbers seem unfathomable. There were fathers, mothers, grandparents, aunts and uncles but as I thought about this in relation to PD I thought about the fact that some of these innocents were caretakers. What follows are the ingredients for the “Gem” cookies.

The Gem cookies are one of life’s treasures. They come in all sizes and buried deep inside the heart of the cookie is a chocolate kiss. This cookie goes by the alias of “caretaker”.

Most of us are blessed with at least one caretaker. They provide us with compassion, support but most of all love. These caretakers give the gift of themselves to us which is the most precious gift of all. This special group walks beside and behind us, holding our hand through this journey with PD and also behind us to catch us when our feet falter.

They are patient with us and try their very best to meet the needs that we can no longer take care of for ourselves. It may be cutting our meat, massaging our aching muscles, or something just as simple as getting our medication and a glass of water but they do it freely and with patience because they truly care for us.

They are the encouragers who brighten our days with a positive attitude or a bright smile. Caretakers indulge us with shopping trips and travels, driving us places so we can see and do things that without them we would never be able to do by ourselves.

Caretakers are our cheerleaders. They are proud of our abilities and try to keep us from focusing on our disabilities. They provide a “you can do it” attitude. And if we try hard enough and believe that there is something we can accomplish, they are right in the trenches with us until our visions are realized.

I am grateful for my caretakers because they allow me to be in control of my PD. They allow me to use my abilities to their fullest potential and then when necessary step in when I ask for assistance. It’s a humbling experience to ask for help because we all enjoy our independence. But it’s also a rewarding experience to know that we are loved unconditionally.

That’s why this cookie of the month, the “Gem” cookie is so wonderful. To me there is no value that can be placed on this cookie – it is priceless. And as I mentioned previously, inside is a special kiss that’s only a caretaker can give that preserves this cookie for years.

The following is an anonymous quote I found but fitting at this time. “Rejoice and be exceedingly glad for your understanding and love have opened doors for us to enjoy life to its full and you have helped us believe in ourselves as valued and gifted people.”

Broken cookies we all are…….but our caretakers are the real treasures and gems of our life.

Till next month, joy be with you and your caretakers!

Love, Carolyn Gambino
