AUGUST

                     a word from the editor

August brings with it the harvest of our gardens, or in other words ... more danged tomatoes than you could  possibly eat, freeze or give away.  Around here the racoons like cantaloupes better than tomatoes, and I'll fight for those. I'll go to extremes to keep the racoons and deer away from my beloved lillies and muskmelons, but the neighbors don't mind my 'innovations'  anymore.

I love the back yard at night. There are still leftover firecrackers popping around here and I've sort of gotten used to them. I wonder if they're causing male fireflies low self esteem, firefly babes must be pretty impressed by the  flashy new guys in the neighborhood.

Late at night I usually take a look at the stars before I go to bed, just in case there is any change up there, or a U.F.O. around.

This month is a good one for meteor showers, the Perseids is an annual meteor shower that comes along in August. You can see them best in the wee hours of the morning (not a problem for us Parkies). Just go outside and look to the northeast. If you're lucky , you'll see some meteorites streaking across the August sky and while you're out there, check out Scorpio to the south. If you need a flashlight, get ahold of one with a red bulb because they won't  'night-blind'  you.

Watch out for the snipes!

      Have fun !

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time. ~J. Lubbock
