From The Co-founders of PLWP;

Back

Hello Everyone,

Time again for another issue of what we consider to be an awesome, on-going, ever-improving, cutting-edge and current-reflection rendering of the Parkinson’s community.  (Whew that was a mouthful but we meant every word of it!)  The editors and writers that contribute to this bi-monthly ezine are to be congratulated as well as thanked for their hard work and big heart.  We are continually reminded of the hearts and minds of the people living with Parkinson’s.  We are always amazed and thankful to be a part of such an amazing family.

There's been a lot of activity in the PLWP neighborhood:

Patients as Providers:  "DBS...Is it right for you?"

Joan Snyder and Holly Angus once again have enjoyed a "whopping success"!  Not only with the  "Shake, Rattle and Roll for Parkinson's Disease", a walk to raise money for Parkinson's that is sponsored by the Parkinson's Alliance, but also the symposium sponsored by PLWP the same weekend.

Held at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria, the panel consisted of Dr. Michael Rezak, Dr. Paul Carvey, Dr. Jorge Ketay and was moderated by Dr. Rick Weber .  Those attending were able to hear first hand how the medical profession perceives DBS and the thought process entailed in developing their own personal implementation.  In addition, there were two individuals who had recently had the surgery.  They shared their views having been on the receiving end of this technology.

Those in the audience were eager to interact with the panel and the panel in turn attentively answered questions to the understanding of everyone there.  We are constantly amazed at the level of knowledge in the Parkinson's community about their disease and the resulting hunger for the latest news...the desire to stay on the cutting edge of their disease.  After the symposium, when asked if they profited from the event,  those on the panel agreed that indeed they did.

A photoshow of these two events is on PLWP!

Thank you Murray Charters

Murray has a talent for ascertaining the latest and greatest, pertinent Parkinson's information.  He is committed to keeping the Parkinson's community informed by sharing his finds with those of us who are interested.  His website where this information is available is:  http://www.geocities.com/murraycharters/index.html

However, PLWP now benefits even more from Murray's commitment.  Here's how it works!  If you are a member of PLWP's Yahoo Group where our chat room is located, you have a couple of options available to you as to how you can access Murray's findings.  (Easy to join at the same address given below.)

Thanks to Nan and Tom Abraham ... Patti & Ron Hager

PLWP's main fundraisers, besides the "Shake, Rattle and Roll", are the golf tournaments organized by these two couples.  Nan and Tom's in Rochester, NY  is on August 26.  Patti and Ron Hager's in Kentucky is on September 20.  Information for both of these events can be accessed at www.plwp.org.   GOOD LUCK YOU GUYS!

PLWP to be featured....

PLWP is the featured "New Hope Profile" for September on the Medtronic website New Hope for Parkinson's   This website is becoming very popular for not having been in existence but just over three months or so.  Anytime you do a Yahoo search on Parkinson's, you'll notice they are listed as a "Sponsor" (These are paid listings provided by Overture Services, Inc. that appear on Yahoo! Search results pages. This program uses a performance-based model in which businesses bid for enhanced placement in search results on terms that are relevant to their business, and pay on a per-click basis.)  We're thrilled with this exposure for PLWP.

 Our Awareness Efforts

We don't travel quite as much as we did, but we try to not let grass grow under our feet either.  We love what we do and we love PLWP.  We are blessed by everything and everyone that PLWP is!

We will touch on a few things that we have participated in besides the above.  We won't go into great detail, but... we spoke at the Parkinson's Educating Symposium in Buffalo, NY on June 7;  Brenda manned a table with Michael and Mary Koontz at the Duke University Parkinson's Symposium in June; Nan spoke at the Rochester Chapter of the NPF in August; we've been invited to attend the Udall Centers of Excellence Conference at Duke University in September; and, we are to speak at the Parkinson's Support Group of Upstate New York the latter part of September.  We were also interviewed in June for a featured article  for a magazine published by Activa that will be coming out in the fall.

We are excited at the activity within the Parkinson's Community as a whole and as always, keeping positive thoughts about all of our futures.  Together, we do make  a difference!
