I first met Mr. David Leitch at a Parkinson's
fundraiser in Chillicothe, IL in 2001. I was helping Joan Snyder with her
silent auction. David kept checking on his bid for a baby quilt which he
wanted for his 1st granddaughter. He was thrilled to be top bidder.
This year at the 2003 fundraiser he mentioned in his speech he was hoping
to bid on a quilt for his second granddaughter. But we had none to offer.
As the afternoon was coming to a close, I
approached David and offered to make the quilt for him. I've only made one
other quilt but felt I could do this. Us Parkies will do anything to raise
money for research.
We emailed several times so I could get an idea
for the color scheme and pattern. It was to be yellow and purple in a crib
rail pattern. I had never heard of this pattern and searched the internet.
No luck. Then I went to a Quilt Shop and got help there. They too
had never heard of that pattern but showed me several patterns with squares set
in as a diamond.
We picked out several yellow and purple and I
was on my way. It took me a week or more to feel confident to cut this
beautiful fabric and sew it together. Then came the quilting. What
if I screwed it up? Another week went by and I thought well it's got to be
done. I did some machine embroidery on one side and it didn't look quite
right. I started to take the stitches out, but was afraid of ruining the
quilt. I then put yellow strips all around the quilt which I think put the
finishing touches on the quilt. I truly enjoyed making this quilt
and hope Dallyn enjoys it too. ...Carol
